Dialogue forum on Science Denial

Workshop, Lecture

Science Denial is a widespread and growing phenomenon, especially when it comes to issues regarding climate change and environmental toxins. At this Dialogue Forum you will get a chance to learn more about the cause of such denialism and how it manifests it self and get the opportunity to discuss and conduct exercises to deepen your understanding of the problem as well as strategies to address it.

The Dialogue Forum on Science Denial will be arranged in a collaboration between Uppsala University, FRAM - The Centre for Future Chemical Risk Assessment and Management Strategies and Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development . As these issues can be problematic in the early stages of an academic career, the dialogue is primarily aimed at young researchers (PhD students and post-docs). Still, senior researchers are also welcome to participate.

The Dialogue Forum will be chaired by Mikael Karlsson, Senior Lecturer in Climate change Leadership and Associate Professor in Environmental Science, and Daniel Lindvall, PhD in Sociology, from Uppsala University. Mikael Karlsson has extensive experience in research on climate policy and climate denial and is a recurring expert in government inquiries. Daniel Lindvall's research lies at the interface between democracy and climate issues, where questions of democratic participation and knowledge are key aspects.

The Dialogue Forum will begin with a short talk by Mikael Karlsson and Daniel Lindvall, with an emphasis on climate change denial, and from Thomas Backhaus, Professor at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences who will talk about denialism with respect to toxic chemicals. It will then move to an open discussion where participants will have the opportunity to discuss and reflect on science denial, and learn about strategies to address it.
